How Modern Investment Banking Serves Corporations, Institutions And The Public

Investment banking is one of the most important backbones of Western capitalist society. Every business needs to raise funding from somewhere both when they start to trade, and when they need to raise capital for expansion. The major investment corporations are able to provide funding through the raising of share capital, and are able to provide the advice that businesses seek. They can also be instrumental in bring the share issues to the potential buyers. The practice of corporate banking remains largely unchanged, but the way it is carried out is now completely different thanks to evolving technology.

The key to understanding the role of the investment banker in society is to understand how corporate finance is raised. The issuance of shares is always with the expectation that the issue will be fully subscribed, and that share buyers will be expecting to receive dividends and a possible increase in price. Even the largest of companies need advice from specialists as to how and where to place their shares into the market. The buyers of shares also need to be able to find what they are looking for easily and quickly, and the investment bankers help to make that happen.

The major part of an investment banker's business is to make sure that corporate interests can raise the finance they need. For this to happen, the share issue needs to be structured in a way which makes it attractive to potential buyers. As the vast majority of share buyers are only trading with one objective in mind, the objective of making money, the most important issue is pricing and the amount of value which can be delivered. Some investors do consider other factors such as the ethical policies of the business, so if the banker knows of any special considerations they should be mentioned in advertising.

By the same token, investment bankers provide services to the general public who buy shares. While the majority of stock issues still go to institutional buyers, an ever greater percentage is being taken up by the general public. The majority of the public do not undertake intensive searches over a wide range of media on a regular basis, because they simply cannot spare the time. They read the specialist financial newspapers and magazines, and will consider any investment which they see through those media. The bankers know that the other advertisers in these publications are their real competition.

The modern investment banking corporations have entire departments which are set up purely to carry out research. These departments will carry out extensive reviews of large numbers of publicly listed corporations, with assessments and comparisons. Some companies will inevitably be rated as ones to buy, and others as ones to sell. Strength ratings are also very important, as very few buyers will be able to buy stock in every recommended business. Most will need to be selective, so some kind of index will be needed. This data is also vital to institutional investors, who will be able to invest in far greater quantities..

So many of the critical techniques used in investment banking are now far easier due to modern technology. It would be a good lesson for the young bankers of today to be taken back in time to the days when there was no computerization, when everything was handled with pieces of paper and index cards in boxes, so they could see how much easier everything is with modern software packages. These technologies not only bring real time prices for every stock and security right into the office, they also allow analysis to be carried out at a very fast pace.

Because of this, many good buying and selling opportunities are uncovered which would previously have remained hidden. The only consideration is, of course, that your competitor banks will also have access to the same technology, so any window of opportunity in the market is not going to last for long. It is important to realize also that individual bankers and traders have to be very disciplined in what they do, as there is always the temptation to take the information which is intended to be used for client use, and to use it to trade on your own account. This is unethical, and is of course illegal.

The modern world of investment banking can sometimes be perceived as something of a closed shop, with outsiders never really admitted inside. This is true to a degree, and the traditions in all major Western countries of bankers coming from wealthy families and attending the top universities is still very much intact. The Internet has made the entire world more accessible, though, and there is no doubt that opportunities exist for breaking in to this career through online learning and home study. Take the time to do your research, and you could break into investment banking.
